("Faced with the election of a Catholic," Peale declared, "our culture is at stake. (The Religious Issue: Hot and Getting Hotter. Newsweek. Sept 19, 1960.) In a written manifesto Peale and his group also declared JFK would serve the interests of the Catholic church before the interests of the United States: "It is inconceivable that a Roman Catholic president would not be under extreme pressure by the hierarchy of his church to accede to its policies with respect to foreign interests," and that the election of a Catholic might even end free speech in America.(The Religious Issue: Hot and Getting Hotter: Newsweek, Sept. 19, 1960. Buckley, William F. "We Hold These Truths." National Review. Jan. 28, 1961).
Even though Catholicism is the largest denomination in the United States, making up about 26% of Americans, it has not been looked upon favorably by all the other protestant Americans. Throughout history there have been fears of Catholics and the believe that the Holy Father, or the Pope might have control over American politics if a Catholic were to take power.
There have been many attempts to block Catholics from office and even limit their right to vote in early American history. Even political parties such as the "American Party" otherwise known as the Know-Nothing Party was created to fight the massive Catholic (Irish) immigration to the United States, and ban them from office. Later there was less harassment towards Catholics yet they were still looked upon with distrust. Even when John F. Kennedy entered the presidential race, he had to first make a statement basically stating that though he is Catholic he does not represent Catholics, or the Church. After Kennedy, American's no longer feared Catholics gaining the presidency or power and many more Catholics have entered politics. Today Catholics have a strong hold in politics; most of the state governors and U.S. Senators are Catholic. Even many presidential candidates such as Rudy Giuliani, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, Christopher Dodd, Dennis Kucinich, Sam Brownback, Thommy Thompson. Even former candidate John Kerry is Catholic. So it may be possible for more Catholics to gain the presidency.
E NENHUM presidente catolico conseguiu se eleger e o unico nao terminou mandato.
Mas sem religiao declarada teve cinco.
Bom, outros numeros estao no primeiro post.
Mais claro que isso....
"politicos catolicos dos EUA
são abortistas "
. Alan Keyes é abortista? Ora, porra!

“The litany of Catholic politicians who were fervently pro-abortion is endless: Joe Biden, Mario Cuomo, Christopher Dodd, Ted Kennedy (in fact, the entire Kennedy dynasty), Barbara Mikulski, Patty Murray, Patrick Leahy, and Mary Landrieu were just a few of the names in an endless catalogue, all of whom were continually elected and re-elected, in overwhelming numbers, by their Catholic constituents.
